Why North Carolina?
INclude has chosen North Carolina (NC) as the base for its pilot due to regional needs, economic disparities, and partnerships. NC has a mix of adequate and excellent mental health services, concentrated in and around cities like Charlotte and Asheville and sparse elsewhere. It has many low-income households in rural areas, where residents are least likely to access mental health and local clinics are often understaffed and poorly equipped to provide it. Very often, higher-income households also do not know how to identify and access care.
Efforts to reach Carolinians have fallen short. Less than 3,000 of them called the state's 211 mental health or addiction assistance services last year, according to nc.211counts.org.
