Disclosing Mental Health Condition to a Partner

1/3/2023

Disclosing your mental health diagnosis to your partner can be a daunting and anxiety-provoking task. However, if you feel inclined to share this information with someone, it is likely because you value honesty and transparency in your relationship and desire a deep level of intimacy. Keep in mind that the right person will see your vulnerability as a testament to the strength of your relationship and will be honored that you trust them enough to share such sensitive information.
It is understandable to worry about how your partner will react, especially if they have little personal experience with mental illness. However, this does not necessarily mean they are not the right person for you. It may simply mean that they have limited understanding of mental health issues and may view your diagnosis through the lens of stigma.

While it may be difficult to risk rejection, it is important to be honest about your mental health status in order to establish a healthy and fulfilling relationship. It is better to know sooner rather than later if your partner is unable to accept and support you, as this will allow you to move on and find someone who can fully embrace and support you. Remember, your time and well-being are just as valuable as your partner's, and it is essential to be with someone who accepts you fully, including your diagnosis.
