How It All Started: Our Origin Story
INclude’s Mental Health GPS is an extension of the Mental Health Initiative (MHI), a groundbreaking program launched by Judith Klein in 1995 under the auspices of the globally recognized Open Society Foundations. MHI operated in 27 countries engaging in a combination of grant making, advocacy and technical assistance. It was the first program of its kind, a human-rights based initiative with a long-term strategy to push for sustainable reform in mental health by working directly with civil society and governments. The Mental Health GPS builds on INclude’s decades of experience in identifying and disseminating good practice in mental health.
We are a group of people passionate about improving access to quality mental health services for everyone. In this project, we help people directly, and immediately, by providing the one thing they need most: a knowledgeable human guide, with a database of vetted services at hand. The project is built on open source technology to help people navigate the system and track outcomes, short and long-term.
Human rights and equity values drive our 25 years of experience in innovation. We believe that the field's status quo must be challenged and needs to move from a 'chronic disease' to a 'recovery' orientation.
The voice and experience of people with mental health and substance use challenges informs all of our work. We value learning and believe in sharing the stories of our learnings across communities and countries. Each experience builds upon another to strengthen the whole. We fuel innovation—with ongoing, rigorous assessment and adjustments to our strategy to pursue inclusive experiences that benefit all.
